Who was Prince Louis Rwagasore?
Son of King Mwambutsa IV, Prince Louis Rwagasore was born in 1932. From an early age, he developed a political conscience marked by his rejection of colonialism. In 1958, he founded theUPRONA (Union for National Progress), a party that advocates independence and national unity between all the country's ethnic components.
Charismatic and deeply patriotic, Rwagasore led a historic electoral campaign and won the elections in September 1961. Unfortunately, he was murdered on october 13, 1961just days after his victory, at the age of 29. This crime plunged the country into mourning, but his legacy lives on.
