Located in the province of Kirundo, between the communes of Busoni and Bwambarangwe, this little-known lake is nevertheless one of Burundi's most beautiful natural spots. Less famous than Lake Rwihinda, it is just as impressive, with its calm waters and unspoilt environment.

A peaceful corner of nature
Surrounded by savannahs, typical trees such as the Parinari curatellifolia and crossed by marshes linked to Lake Rweru, Lake Kanzigiri is a small paradise for nature lovers. It boasts remarkable biodiversity and is an important stopover for migratory birds every year.

Fishing and local life
For generations, the local people have relied in part on traditional fishing, although today, overfishing and invasive plants pose challenges. Despite this, the lake continues to nurture communities and retain its charm intact.

How to get there
The lake can be reached from Kirundo by following the road to Busoni, then to Bwambarangwe, with a final stretch of track. It's not very well developed yet, but that's what makes the experience all the more authentic.

Why visit Lake Kanzigiri?

  • A peaceful moment in the heart of unspoilt nature
  • Watch migratory birds and enjoy a unique landscape
  • Meet friendly locals and discover their way of life
  • To support local, sustainable tourism

Lake Kanzigiri is a discreet but magical place. If you're looking for a natural destination off the beaten track, this jewel in Burundi's north will seduce you with its tranquillity and authenticity.
