Presidential Palace: Witness to Bujumbura's history

Burundi has seen a number of presidential palaces over the course of its history, reflecting the country's political evolution. These imposing buildings, located mainly in the capital, Bujumbura, have witnessed key events in Burundian political life.

NTARE Rushatsi Presidential Palace

• Location: MC87+828, Nyambuye,Bujumbura.
• Construction: Completed in 2019.
• History: Named after the founder of the Burundian kingdom Ntare, this modern palace has been inaugurated by former president Pierre Nkurunziza.
• Architecture: The contemporary-style palace is not open to the public, and no photos of the interior are available.
• Function: Official seat of the Presidency of the Republic of Burundi, but not the residence of the Head of State.
• Controversy: Its construction has triggered some criticism due to its high cost in a country where poverty remains widespread.

Gasenyi Palace

• Location: Gasenyi district, north of Bujumbura.
• Construction: Completed in 2019, donated by China to Burundi.
• Architecture: Modern style with traditional influences. The palace and its 40 hectares of gardens are surrounded by an enclosure.
• Function: Mainly administrative, it has offices and meeting rooms, but no presidential residence as such.

Other presidential palaces

• The old Palais: Located in the center of Bujumbura, more modest than its successors, it no longer appears to have any official presidential function.
• Regional palaces: Presidential palaces can be found in other Burundian towns, including Gitega, the current political capital, and in Kirundo.
