Created in <strong data-start=\"250\" data-end=\"258\">1980<\/strong> to protect the region's rich biodiversity, the park plays a crucial role in the conservation of Burundi's flora and fauna. It also serves as a refuge for numerous animal and plant species, some of which are threatened with extinction. Thanks to its natural beauty and diverse ecosystem, the park attracts researchers, ecologists and eco-tourists from all over the world.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"723\"><strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"721\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><h2 data-start=\"688\" data-end=\"723\"><strong data-start=\"691\" data-end=\"721\">Location and area<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"724\" data-end=\"1278\">The Ruvubu National Park covers an impressive area of around <strong data-start=\"807\" data-end=\"818\">508 km\u00b2 of land<\/strong>covering four Burundian provinces: <strong data-start=\"860\" data-end=\"898\">Karuzi, Muyinga, Cankuzo and Ruyigi<\/strong>. It takes its name from the <strong data-start=\"922\" data-end=\"940\">Ruvubu river<\/strong>which crosses the park from north to south, providing an essential source of water for local flora and fauna. The river also plays a fundamental role in the park's ecological balance, irrigating the surrounding plains and supporting wetlands crucial to the reproduction of certain animal species.<\/p><p data-start=\"1280\" data-end=\"1536\">Thanks to its vast surface area, the park offers a wide variety of landscapes, from <strong data-start=\"1368\" data-end=\"1388\">wooded savannahs<\/strong>to <strong data-start=\"1394\" data-end=\"1422\">dense tropical forests<\/strong>through to <strong data-start=\"1443\" data-end=\"1480\">marshes and green meadows<\/strong>creating an ideal habitat for a wide variety of wildlife.<\/p><h2 data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1581\"><strong data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1579\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2><h2 data-start=\"1543\" data-end=\"1581\"><strong data-start=\"1546\" data-end=\"1579\">Biodiversity and Wildlife<\/strong><\/h2><p data-start=\"1582\" data-end=\"1790\">The Ruvubu National Park is renowned for being home to a large <strong data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1673\">exceptional wildlife<\/strong>making it one of the last refuges for several endangered animal species in the Great Lakes region.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1814\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"1792\" data-end=\"1814\">Mammals :<\/h3><p data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1876\">It is home to a wide variety of mammals, including :<\/p><ul data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"2140\"><li data-start=\"1877\" data-end=\"1906\">Visit <strong data-start=\"1883\" data-end=\"1904\">African buffaloes<\/strong><\/li><li data-start=\"1907\" data-end=\"1956\">Visit <strong data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"1926\">antelopes<\/strong> (like the impala and the eland)<\/li><li data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1980\">Visit <strong data-start=\"1963\" data-end=\"1978\">warthogs<\/strong><\/li><li data-start=\"1981\" data-end=\"2045\">Visit <strong data-start=\"1987\" data-end=\"2003\">hippopotamuses<\/strong> that gather along the river<\/li><li data-start=\"2046\" data-end=\"2140\">Visit <strong data-start=\"2052\" data-end=\"2064\">primates<\/strong> such as baboons, black and white colobus monkeys, and vervet monkeys<\/li><\/ul><h3 data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2161\">\u00a0<\/h3><h3 data-start=\"2142\" data-end=\"2161\">The Birds:<\/h3><p data-start=\"2162\" data-end=\"2343\">The park is a veritable paradise for birdwatchers, with <strong data-start=\"2234\" data-end=\"2267\">over 200 bird species<\/strong>some of which are endemic to the region.
