This natural site, nestled in a verdant region marked by oil palm plantations, is frequented by local and foreign visitors attracted by its warm waters.

Site access

To reach the thermal waterfall, leave from the chief town of Rumonge and take the Rumonge - Nyanza-Lac road. After about 12 km and crossing the Buzimba river, you reach the Mugara hill. From here, a 6 km dirt road leads to the site. This road, although rehabilitated in the past, is now in poor condition, making access difficult, particularly in the dry season.

Facilities and infrastructure

Facilities include a large tiled pool, several smaller pools for smaller groups, and a massage area. An area reserved for women, young mothers and girls guarantees their privacy. A nearby private hotel offers accommodation for visitors.

Therapeutic properties

Mugara's thermal waters are locally renowned for their relaxing and healing properties. Many visitors testify to improvements in their state of health after several baths, particularly with regard to disorders linked to rheumatism and nervous disorders. After-bath massages also contribute to the sense of well-being.

Pricing and local impact

Access to the site is subject to differentiated rates: between BIF 2,000 and BIF 3,000 for nationals depending on the day, BIF 20,000 for African visitors and US$10 for other foreigners. Mugara residents enjoy free access in the morning and evening.

This activity generates income for the municipality and the province, as well as benefiting local innkeepers and shopkeepers.

Areas for improvement

Despite its potential, the site faces a number of difficulties: the deteriorated state of the access road, inadequate accommodation and catering facilities, and the lack of on-site medical staff to supervise visitors, particularly those with special pathologies.

Better organization in terms of hygiene, dress and respect for users could also contribute to a better experience on the site.

The provincial authorities are seeking to mobilize partners to modernize the site, improve infrastructures and provide appropriate health care, while enhancing the value of this natural heritage while respecting users and local culture.

The Mugara thermal waterfall is located on Mugara hill, in Gatete zone, Rumonge province.
